The historic William Scarbrough House is located at 41 Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard on the west edge of the historic district in Savannah. Designed by noted English architect William Jay, this house was built for William Scarbrough, president of the Savannah Steamship Company, and was completed in 1819.
Interestingly, Scarbrough hosted President James Monroe here in May of 1819. The president came to the city to personally witness the launching of the S.S. Savannah on the special occasion of the world’s first trans-Atlantic steamship voyage.
