The Cathedral of St. John the Baptist is a Roman Catholic cathedral and minor basilica located at 222 East Harris Street on the Northeast corner of Lafayette Square. It is the Mother Church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Savannah.
Interestingly, the colonial charter of Savannah prohibited Roman Catholics from settling in the city (The original charter also prohibited lawyers and slavery). The English trustees feared that Catholics would be more loyal to the Spanish authorities in Florida than respectful of the government of England and the Colony of Georgia.
